Unique Physical Properties of Polylactic Acid Drives the Global Market

Polylactic acid or PLA is a biodegradable thermoplastic aliphatic polyester made from renewable sources such as corn, starch, tapioca roots, sugarcane and others. PLA is produced using two monomers – lactic acid and lactide. There are two common methods used to produce PLA. First method is the polymerization of lactide with metal catalysts and another method involves condensation of lactic acid.

Some critics asserted that the use of above food products should be prohibited for production of plastics. The Dutch company, Corbion Purac, started production of PLA using sources such as corn stover, bagasse, wood chips and wheat straw. The company admitted that further research and development is needed to speed up the process of commercialization of PLA.

The world PLA market is classified by application into packaging, textile, agriculture, electronics, bio-medical and others. PLA was dominantly used for packaging application in 2014 due to its unique thermal and barrier properties.

Geographically, the global polylactic acid market is segmented into North America, Asia-Pacific, Europe and Latin America, Middle East & Africa (LAMEA). Among these regions, North America was the largest consumer of PLA in 2014 with market share of 49.6% of global market. Asia–pacific market would grow at the highest rate till 2020, owing to its increasing adoption in countries such as China, Japan, Thailand and others.

Easy availability of raw materials, unique physical properties, consumer awareness and supportive government policies are key driving factors for growth of world polylactic acid market. However, the need for industrial composting and higher cost of PLA as compared to synthetic plastics are challenges companies need to overcome to gain the stronghold of market. There are many studies have been done that analyze present market trends and opportunities for market growth in future. Recently, Big Market Research adds a report titled “WorldPolylactic Acid Market - Opportunities and Forecast, 2014–2020.” The report provides an in-depth analysis of changing market dynamics of global polylactic acid industry.

Polylactic Acid (PLA) Market in Packaging, Textile, Agriculture, Analysis and Forecast, 2012 – 2020 at Big Market Research

"Polylactic Acid (PLA) Market in Packaging, Textile, Agriculture, Transportation, Bio-Medical, Electronics and Others - Global Industry Size, Company Share, Growth, Trends, Strategic Analysis and Forecast, 2012 – 2020.” by allied market research is published at big market research.com
According to the research report, the global Polylactic Acid (PLA) market is expected to reach $5.2 billion by 2020 growing at a CAGR of 19.5% from 2013 to 2020. Asia Pacific will be the fastest growing market at a CAGR of 21.6% during this period whereas Europe will maintain its lead in terms of revenue till 2020, despite having a comparatively slower growth.
Polylactic Acid (PLA) is thermoplastic polyester derived from renewable feedstock such as corn starch, sugarcane, wheat, tapioca roots. PLA has wide application such as in Packaging, Textile, Agriculture, Transportation, Bio-Medical and Electronics industry. Due to environmental concerns and scarcity & volatility of prices of fossil fuels, many companies and government regulatory bodies are focusing to find substitute to oil-based products. Moreover, bio based plastics has huge potential to reduce the consumption and dependency on petroleum based feedstock and lessen negative impact on environment by reducing carbon footprints. Thus, PLA has emerged mainly as source of biodegradable plastics available in the market in recent years. Furthermore, ongoing research and technical development in the field of bio-based plastics have enhanced their properties such as high temperature resistance, thus increasing scope of its application market. The global Polylactic Acid market is presently facing supply crunch as few international manufacturers trying hard to meet rapidly rising demand for bio-based plastics. Thus, it is anticipated that the global Polylactic Acid market will grow at a double digit growth rate.
Low-cost and easy availability of raw materials are important factors that are contributing to the cost-effectiveness of PLA. The production costs are however, expected to further reduce with research focused on identifying alternative sources of raw materials. On the contrary, certain restraining factors too exist which will restrain the growth of PLA market. “Need for industrial composting to completely degrade PLA, will act as an important restraint” said Clark and Singh.
